Thank you for visiting the City of Fairfield website, and welcome. Whether you are a long-time resEd Malloyident of the city or new to our town, I hope you will find everything you need or the connections to other parts of our community you are looking for. Our desire is to make you feel at home and assist you in any way we can.

Fairfield is a community of people who share a deep sense of pride in our past while embracing the diversity and change that defines us now. Our recently restored historic Massdam Barns with accompanying museum and welcome center display the connections to our agricultural and manufacturing past. The Fairfield Arts and Convention Center in our downtown defines our present commitment to arts, culture, and entrepreneurship that is making Fairfield famous.

In 2011 we were visited by Oprah Winfrey and featured on her OWN Network. Ms. Winfrey learned the practice of Transcendental Meditation and came to discover the community where the Maharishi University of Management has attracted practitioners of TM from all over the world.

We have received many state and national awards that define the unique character of our citizens. In 2006 we were voted one of Iowa's Great Places. In 2003 we were named "The Most Entrepreneurial Community in America (10,000 population and under)" by the National Association of Small Communities, and in 2004 we were named "Iowa's Most Entrepreneurial Community." Mother Earth News included Fairfield in its "12 Great Places You've Never Heard Of." Most recently we were named an Iowa Blue Zones demonstration site to achiever greater longevity for our citizens.

We value good government, good schools, and educational opportunities, healthy living, recreation, arts, and culture. All of these and more are in abundance in our community. Our downtown features unique shopping and dining and hosts many festivals throughout the year including the award-winning 1st Fridays Art Walk each month.  We believe in good and careful planning for our future. In 2002 we published a 10-year strategic plan (PDF) and in 2009 we launched our Go Green Strategic Plam (PDF) for a sustainable community. Both documents are available on this site.

I couldn't be more honored to represent Fairfield and take great pride in telling the story of our community's successes. I also take personal responsibility to be accessible to all citizens and anyone interested in learning more about Fairfield, so please don't hesitate to contact me at City Hall at (641) 472-6193 or email me.
